Rowing to Houston

Rowing 2 Houston:

Go to http://liftflorida.org/rowing-2-houston/

You can register for $35! Deadline is May, 4, 2012!

Make sure when you register you have:

-Your 2000m row time using a Concept 2 rower for bracket seeding purposes

AND

-Make sure to register under Crossfit Salt

Here is more information about Rowing 2 Houston from their website:

This single elimination contest is a seeded bracket tournament that challenges participants to a 1000m row for time. Once the times are submitted from area gyms, the athlete will advance through the bracket (as long as they win!) This is a GREAT way to rank yourself against other CrossFit athletes and within other affiliates. So…who has the fastest time?

We will find out in May! The GREAT thing about this challenge is that all the money raised stays locally to help our kids…especially the ones within our boxes!

Round 1: May 7-11

Round 2: May 14-18

Round 3: May 21-24

Finals: May 28-30

Compete in Male, Female and Team Categories…Age Groups 19 & Under, 20-39, or Master’s Division

When the competitor registers, they will be asked to submit a 2000m row time using a Concept 2 rower. This is done for bracket seeding purposes. Entries MUST be received (with 2k row time) by May 4, 2012. Athlete will row and submit a new 1000m row time each week – for bracket advancement. Row time must be submitted and verified by athlete’s box owner or coach by the last date of each week (this will be the last day of each round as well).

Prizes will be awarded for the the following:

1. Boxes and/or gyms with the most participation (i.e., the more athletes that participate), the higher the value of the prizes your box can win! Each box will receive any one of the following:

10 event registrations = 10 jump ropes for the affiliate
20 event registrations = 24kg Kettlebell for the affiliate
50 event registrations = 1 – 20kg barbell for the affiliate
Overall most registrations = complete barbell set for the affiliate

1. Box/gym with the best overall time, including all rounds will receive the COVETED “Golden Oar” to display in their gym for the next year. Annually, the Golden Oar will be passed from gym to gym in a ceremonial fashion, that is sure to be a statement!

Did you have a bad day on the rower? Or….were you eliminated too soon? Buy your way back in to the Loser’s Bracket, and continue on with the challenge to see how much farther you can get! It’s only $5!

All monies raised will go toward sending local youth athletes to the AAU Junior Olympics in Houston, TX, this July. LIFT Florida, a 501(c)3, provides assistance with equipment purchase, weightlifting club membership, uniforms, weightlifting shoes and supplies, as well as team travel expenses.

Row or Ski for Disaster Relief
For the 2011 Holiday Challenge, we’ll be rowing and skiing for disaster relief organizations, both international and in our home state of Vermont, which was hit very hard by Hurricane Irene.

For every person who completes at least 100k during the challenge, Concept2 will donate $.02 for each kilometer (1000 meters) you accumulate to your choice of the following organizations:

■Vermont Disaster Relief Fund
■American Red Cross Disaster Relief (International)
■Unicef—Emergency Relief Programs
Once you get beyond 100k, we’ll donate $.04 per kilometer (for kids and adaptive athletes, the $.04 rate will take effect at 50k). The usual prizes of pin and certificate will be awarded as well.

Our goal through this group effort is to raise $30,000 to support these causes, and every bit adds up! Since adding the donation component to the 2008 Holiday Challenge, together we’ve raised over $80,000 for many great causes!

WOD: Murph

· BATH, Maine – Engaged in a frenzied firefight and outnumbered by the Taliban, Navy Lt. Michael Murphy made a desperate decision as he and three fellow SEALs fought for their lives on a rocky mountainside in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province in 2005.

In a last-ditch effort to save his team, Murphy pulled out his satellite phone, walked into a clearing to get reception and called for reinforcements as a fusillade of bullets ricocheted around him. One of the bullets hit him, but he finished the call and even signed off, “Thank you.”

Then he continued the battle.

Dan Murphy, the sailor’s father, said it didn’t surprise him that his slain son nicknamed “The Protector” put himself in harm’s way. Nor was he surprised that in the heat of combat his son was courteous.

“That was Michael. He was cool under fire. He had the ability to process information, even under the most difficult of circumstances. That’s what made him such a good SEAL officer,” Murphy said.

A warship bearing the name of the Medal of Honor recipient will be christened Saturday — on what would have been Murphy’s 35th birthday — at Bath Iron Works, where the destroyer is being built.

Murphy, who was 29 when he died, graduated from Pennsylvania State University and was accepted to multiple law schools, but decided he could do more for his country as one of the Navy’s elite SEALS — special forces trained to fight on sea, air and land — the same forces that killed Osama bin Laden this week in Pakistan.

Heightened security will be in effect as Murphy’s mother, Maureen, christens the ship by smashing a bottle of champagne against the bow of the 510-foot-long warship as Murphy’s father, brother and others watch.

Murphy, of Patchogue, N.Y., earned his nickname after getting suspended in elementary school for fighting with bullies who tried to stuff a special-needs child into a locker and for intervening when some youths were picking on a homeless man, said Dan Murphy, a lawyer, former prosecutor and Army veteran who served in Vietnam.

Maureen Murphy said he thought he was too young to take a desk job as a lawyer. Instead, he went to officer candidate school, the first step on his journey to become a SEAL officer. He was in training during the Sept. 11 attacks, which shaped his views.

His view was that there are “bullies in the world and people who’re oppressed in the world. And he said, ‘Sometimes they have to be taken care of,'” she said.
